Definition of Architecture
Architecture, as a profession is the practice of providing a service, which includes many different disciplines while the overall aim of an architect is to design buildings.

Architecture, as a profession is the practice of providing a service, which includes many different disciplines while the overall aim of an architect is to design buildings.  Architecture can refer to the actual product, the architecture of a building or it can refer to the method or style, the knowledge and styles used to design the building. Architects are licensed professionals trained in the art and science of building design. They transform needs into concepts and then develop the concepts into images and plans of buildings that can be constructed by others.

Architecture is an interdisciplinary field.  It requries an understanding and application of mathematics, science, art, technology, social sciences, politics and history. The earliest known achitectural theorist Vitruvis stated that, "Architecture is a science, arising out of many other sciences, and adorned with much and varied learning: by the help of which a judgement is formed of those works which are the result of other arts."  The combination of such varied fields required architects to be good at many different things at the same time.  It is therefore difficult to become an architect and even more difficult to become an accomplished architect.

The responsibility of an architect often includes much more than the design of a building.  The practice of architecture includes the planning, designing and oversight of a building’s constrctuction.  Architect’s are often responsible for the feasibility, cost, function and aesthetics of the building.

The word architect derives from the Greek arkhitekton (arkhi (chieft) + tekton (builder). In the most general since an architect translates the user’s needs for functionality into a physical, built solution. In order to accomplish this an architect must completely understand the building and operational codes under which the building will be built. This understanding will ensure that the architect will design building that can be built within the budget and time boundaries.

Architects design the overall aesthetic and look of buildings and other structures, but the design of a building involves far more than its appearance. Buildings also must be functional, safe, and economical and must suit the needs of the people who use them. Architects consider all these factors when they design buildings and other structures.
