FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

What Is Organic Architecture?

ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE
Organic Architecture is a term Frank Lloyd Wright used to describe his approach to architectural design. The philosophy grew from the ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor, Louis Sullivan, who believed that "form follows function." Wright argued that "form and function are one."

Buildings Index

During his lifetime, Frank Lloyd Wright built 532 homes, museums, and office buildings. Many have been demolished, but more than 400 Wright-designed buildings still stand. On this page you will find:
  • All intact (still-standing) structures designed by Wright and built during his life and under his supervision
  • A sampling note-worthy buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright but not constructed until years after his death.
  • A few of the many Frank Lloyd Wright buildings that no longer stand.

Please note that countless other fine buildings have been inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright plans. However, since they were adapted by a different architect, Wright-inspired houses do not appear in this listing.

In determining which buildings are authentic Frank Lloyd Wright structures, a definitive source of information can be found in the catalogs compiled by Frank Lloyd Wright scholar, W.A. Storrer. Storrer's Web site, FLW Update, posts announcements of new information about Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

his personal STYLE and concepts

Wright's creations took his concern with organic architecture down to the smallest details. From his largest commercial commissions to the relatively modest Usonian houses, Wright conceived virtually every detail of both the external design and the internal fixtures, including furniture, carpets, windows, doors, tables and chairs, light fittings and decorative elements.

his BIOGRAPHY
Frank Lloyd Wright was born in the farming town of Richland Center, Wisconsin, United States, in 1867. Originally named Frank Lincoln Wright, he changed his name after his parents' divorce to honor his mother's Welsh family, the Lloyd Joneses. His father, William Carey Wright (1825–1904) was a locally admired orator, music teacher, occasional lawyer and itinerant minister. William Wright had met and married Anna Lloyd Jones (1838/39 – 1923), a county school teacher, the previous year when he was employed as the superintendent of schools for Richland County.
