INSTRUCTIONS
Look for buildings built between the late 1970s and the present to find examples of American post-modern architecture. Note the wide range of building styles used since the 1970s in residential and commercial buildings.
Notice the exaggerated, mixed historical styles used particularly in residential architecture after the late 1970s. Recognize a post-modern house by its use of traditional styles in an untraditional manner.
View commercial buildings with the context of the "glass box" commercial structures of the International Modern Architecture movement. Appreciate the "anything goes" mentality adopted by post-modern architects. Note the mix of sleek modern style with historical period accents as illustrated by the pyramid glass structures of the College Life Insurance Company Building in Indianapolis, Indiana, or the Beaux-Arts classical symmetry of the Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Marvel at the rebellion of the post-modern architectural movement against the uniformity of the modern architectural style. Look at Disney Hall, the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for an example of the post-modern "anything goes" mentality.
Recognize the historical influence dominating residential and commercial post-modern architecture. Note the irreverence of mixing historical styles, modern influences and current building materials in architecture today. Look at most new construction and realize you are living in the post-modern era.
